It is strongly encouraged that musicians who want to work in healthcare environments - hospitals, hospices, skilled nursing facilities - attend a accredited therapeutic musician program.
A majority of states require additional credentials and certification for all personnel who come into contact with patients.
The programs I attended are accredited by The National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians (NSBTM). From their Website, the NSBTM:
consists of leaders in the therapeutic music field who have joined together to develop and maintain standards for therapeutic musician training programs and their graduates. The NSBTM does not lobby or pay money for any lobbying. The practice of the therapeutic musician is to use the intrinsic healing elements of live music and sound to provide an environment conducive to the human healing process.
I am certified through the International Harp Therapy Program (2014) as a Harp Therapy Practitioner; and in 2023 became a Certified Clinical Musician in the Harp for Healing Program.
