Skies of Honolulu
Hospice and Transition

I play at the bedside of patients in hospice care, whether in a facility or in a private home.

I provide a quiet, restful, and meditative musical offering. I first explain briefly what I do to the the hospice nurse, family members and friends who are present and listen to what they have to say about the patient. I then begin with an improvisation based on the patient's patient's breathing, state of consciousness, eye-flutter and other observable phenomena.

I use my training and my intuition to create a unique musical product as the patient and I go on a journey. I might segue into a lullaby, hymn, Gregorian chant, and incorporate a local tune, or musical ideas suggested by family members, using a wide range of tempos attending to the patient's needs in the moment.

I offer this service as a gift to the O'ahu Community. In other words, my service is free.

Improvised music

If the patient is conscious and willing to talk, I find out a little bit about the patient before playing - while consulting with the patient, I usually begin with slow arpeggios - perhaps playing a scale with a drone note. I usually begin a session with improvisations that are not associated with an individual's particular memories, thoughts or feelings. Should an individual requests a particular tune, I will do my best to play it. My intention is to be fully present in the moment, sensing when sound is appropriate and when silence is needed.
